Did you notice anything a bit unusual about the silhouette of Priscilla Martin in my previous blog post? If nothing comes to mind, here are two more examples from the same series, and these share the same peculiarity:
The answer, of course, is that the umbrella is not entirely in silhouette. It is made of clear, transparent plastic, and I chose to leave it transparent in post processing. To my way of thinking, if I had blacked it out it the image would have become less interesting and more graphical. Likewise, leaving the shaft of the umbrella visible as it crosses Priscilla's body also adds a bit it interest.
Like everything, this is simply a matter of taste. It was fortuitous that Priscilla wanted a prop to pose with, the umbrella was handy, the umbrella was transparent, she just happened to be wearing the perfect outfit for silhouettes, and that I forgot to turn on the flash trigger. I wish I could say that I had planned this!
