Bokeh for Backgrounds

An easy, fun project is to take out-of-focus images of lights, and use them as backgrounds in glamour composites. Good places are downtown areas at dusk and after sunset. An excellent lens is a 50mm f/1.4, set at f/1.4, and focused as close as the lens will focus. This blurs the background, and yields nice bokeh wherever there are specular highlights. Holidays are great times for photographs like this, as extra lights are often present along shopping areas. This background was taken along Orchard Road in Singapore. Here is another example, this time with Kaley Moutrey, taken at the same location:
