Colorizing Backgrounds with Solid Colors

Here is a composite of Michelle, with the seamless background paper masked out and replaced by an HDR scene taken at Marina Barrage in Singapore. It is OK, but I wanted something more:

Admittedly, the light orange color of Michelle's outfit is difficult to composite. No color seems to blend or contrast with orange very well. With this in mind, I decided to go with the orange color and simply colorize the background. I sampled the lightest orange color of the fabric, and filled a new blank layer above the Marina Barrage layer with this color. In Normal layer blend mode this completely blocked out the Marina Barrage layer:

The key move was to set the layer blend mode of the solid light orange layer to Hue. This let the Marina Barrage layer show through and colorized it as well. I also darkened the Marina Barrage layer a bit with a Curves adjustment layer and added a vignette. Here is the final result:
